California-born Amanda Marsalis's photography career began during her teenage years, when she would document punk shows held in her mother's basement and skip class to spend time in her high school's darkroom. She attended the California College of Arts and Crafts and prior to graduation, began shooting for magazines and advertising agencies and exhibiting her work.
She finds inspiration in her home state – specifically, the magic hour of Los Angeles and the intricacy of its landscape. She focuses on intimacy and her pictures are informed by the classic reportage of Bruce Davidson, Larry Sultan, and Nan Goldin.
Marsalis counts Vogue, Conde Nast Traveler, GQ, and The Guardian as her clients. Her accolades include PDN's 30 under 30 (2003), several first place PDN Self-Promo Awards, Surface's Avant Guardian roundup (2001), and an honorable mention for the James D. Phelan Award. Her imagery has been published in two books, "Reproduction" and "Landscapes," and her debut feature film, "Echo Park," comes in the begining of 2016.
