Dirty BanditsAnnica Lydenberg of Dirty Bandits is a San Francisco and Brooklyn-based designer, illustrator and sign painter deeply obsessed with type. As a graphic designer she had been paying close attention to typography for many years but is now focusing on treating letters and words as art in various mediums.
Her dedication to learning as driven her career as a lettering artist. Annica graduated from Skidmore College in 2000 with a BS in Studio Arts. After countless continuing education courses in design and printmaking she embarked on a new venture in typeface design at Cooper Union and was part of the inaugural graduating class of the Type@Cooper program. At that time she began traveling across the country for short stints apprenticing at New Bohemia Signs in San Francisco to study the newly revived art of hand sign painting. She now shares her love of learning by teaching various online classes about lettering with Skillshare and Creative Live.
Phrases Annica draws and paints are inspired by traditional show card writing, 90s hip hop and her love of puns and word play. Each word is treated as an image in and of itself rather than a word rendered in a particular font. She works with painting, chalk, screen printing, and pen and ink, pulling stylistic influence from an ever growing photographic library of found type, vintage and contemporary signage and tattoo lettering.
